1.Marion Berry re-elected after caught smoking crack in a hotel room.

The year was 1990 and for the first time in American History an elected official was videotaped doing illegal drugs. Not only was he smoking crack but he was the mayor of our nation’s capital. When the police rushed in and caught the mayor with a crack pipe to his lips he yelled the words that would become a catch phrase for that year. “The bitch set me up!!” .The news had a field day with the footage. berry vrackThey played the clip over and over. After serving 6 months in the FEDS the people of Washington, Dc re-elected Marion Berry as mayor 1994.

2. Finding out DC sniper was black.

The fall of 2002 people were still afraid to open the mail from the anthrax craze. Then all of a sudden you got a sniper riding round shooting random people. While this was going on everyone in black community was thinking, crazy ass white folks. It is common beliefs among black people that we don’t “do shit like that”. We just knew the dude was going to look like Una-bomber or skin head Aryan nation. Boy were we wrong.sniper_court
When the news revealed it was two black guys there was a collective “WTF?!?!?!” uttered by those in the black community.

3. Wearing Jheri Curls

Though the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s black people were rocking some crazy hair dos. No hairstyle says the 1980’s like the Jheri Curl. It was like a perm but with motor oil and thick permanent curls. This was the worst hairstyle ever. Here’s why, first your hair will dry out after a few hours like sponge left out in the sun. So you had to carry a bottle of “activator” and give your hair a few sprays. It was really greasy and people started to wear shower caps in public so you would not stain your car or neighbors’ couch. Memorable Jheri Curl from Deon Sanders.

4. Robbing people for air Jordan’s and starter jackets.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s in the black folks were robbing each other for Starter jackets and Air Jordan’s. The jackets were just pull-over or button up jackets with the logos of baseball, football and basket ball teams. The price range was around 200-250$ depending on how popular the team was.

When Jordan’s hit the scene they were some of the most expensive sneakers a young urban dweller could hope for priced around 130$. Air Jordan’s were the premier shoe for anyone who wanted to stand out and be apart of the crowd at the same time. Jordan helped usher in the trend of over priced basketball sneakers that you don’t play basket ball in.
Just click the links below to read some old newspaper articles about people who where stabbed, mugged or killed for sneakers and jackets.

It’s funny how trends change nowadays the Starter brand of clothing can be found at your local Wal-Mart. While a fresh pair of knock off Jordan’s from 1985-current can be purchased for 40-50 bucks via internet or your local Flea Market.

5. The LA riots

On April 29th 1992, 12 jurors in California found four white police officers not guilty in the beating of Rodney King. The incident was capture on video a year earlier. Most in black community who saw the video felt Rodney King was did not deserve the merciless ass kicking delivered by the police. The videotaped ass whipping by the LA police brought to light what inner city folks had been saying for years. ”the police will whip your ass” not just rough you up on some Hawaii 5-0 shit.

After the first trial of the officers was ruled not guilty,on live television, parts city erupted into riots. For three days thick black smoke filled the air from building set ablaze by angered youth.

Each day the news ran footage of black people looting. I remember watching tv it seemed like a non stop video stream of black people dragging sofas, chairs and whatever else they could carry.

One the worst scenes from the riots involved a truck driver by the name of Reginald Denney. Reginald was snatched from his truck cab while stopped at a red light. He was then beaten punched kicked by multiply attackers and finally hit in the head with a fire extinguisher.
The rioting stopped only when the Governor called in 4000 National Guard troops. In the end it was a horrible more than 50 killed, over 4000 injured, 12,000 people arrested, and $1 billion in property damage!!
